A vacancy exists for three (3) Boma Assistants based at Veterinary Wildlife Services, Skukuza, Kruger National Park. The positions report to the Boma Supervisor.
Requirements
- Minimum 1–2 years’ experience in the wildlife capture industry or wildlife care in holding facilities.
- Grade 12 certificate.
- National Diploma in Nature Conservation / Wildlife Management or equivalent (advantageous).
- Knowledge of wildlife industry SOPs and animal welfare requirements.
- Willingness to work flexible hours (weekends & after hours).
- Basic understanding of the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
- Must be in good physical health.
- Experience in maintenance tasks (brickwork, plastering, welding, carpentry, plumbing) is an advantage.
- Experience with brush-cutters, chainsaws, and tractor driving is an advantage.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Code B or C1 driver’s licence is an advantage.
Responsibilities
- Provide fodder and water to wildlife in the holding facility according to nutritional schedules.
- Maintain facility hygiene; remove and dispose of waste and spoiled fodder.
- Monitor and report concerns regarding wildlife welfare and fodder stock.
- Assist with wildlife handling during sales, translocation, or research projects.
- Assist with offloading and storing fodder supplies.
- Support general boma operations and cleanliness of structures and stores.
- Conduct maintenance tasks including vegetation clearing, fence repairs, herbicide application, and repairs to boma structures.
- Report equipment malfunctions and safety hazards.
- Maintain animal checklists as required.
- Adhere to OHS standard operating procedures.
