Requirements

  • NQF Level 2 (Grade 10 or equivalent).
  • Basic knowledge of portering services and the public health system.
  • Understanding of key policies:

    • Occupational Health and Safety
    • Six Priorities
    • National Core Standards
  • Ability to work under pressure and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Good interpersonal, organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Must be self-motivated, reliable, approachable and able to act with discretion.
  • Good customer-service skills and confidentiality handling.
  • Must be prepared to rotate within scope of work and work shifts (after hours, night duty, weekends, public holidays).
  • Willing to undergo medical surveillance.

Duties

  • Transport patients from registration points to clinical areas.
  • Assist patients who cannot walk, including movement to/from private vehicles.
  • Escort walking and non-walking patients; prepare stretchers and wheelchairs.
  • Ensure safe transport of patients to and from wards/departments.
  • Observe patients closely during escorting.
  • Receive patients from ambulances/vehicles onto stretchers/wheelchairs with a healthcare professional present.
  • Assist with transferring patients between beds, trolleys and stretchers.
  • Record, register and provide daily statistics of all transported patients.
  • Check, clean and maintain wheelchairs and stretchers; report faults.
  • Maintain updated inventory of equipment.
  • Collect and lay out stretchers daily.
  • Relieve other areas when required and comply with rotation schedules.
  • Wear hospital identification/name tag daily.
  • Attend departmental training and meetings.
  • Uphold Batho Pele Principles and maintain professionalism (dress code, time management, client care).
  • Follow all legal instructions from senior staff.
  • Treat all staff and clients with dignity and respect.
  • Adhere to portering policies, procedures and OHSA requirements.
  • Comply with Performance Management and Development System processes.
