Overview:


This apprenticeship is only open to matriculants at this stage. Additional opportunities will be advertised in August and September for broader applicants.

This is a three-year in-service training program towards a qualification as a Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic.

The initial six months serve as a probation period, after which the successful candidate will sign a formal contract with AFGRI and commence official training.

Training Includes:

  • Practical training at an institute (phased as needed)
  • Enrollment in distance-learning N-subjects via college (Saturday classes may be required)
  • Product Training (e.g., John Deere)
  • Internal technical training (suppliers and AFGRI specialists)

Note: Training is free if passed. Failed subjects must be redone at the apprentice’s own cost and time.

Contract Conditions:

  • 3-year binding contract, with a potential “work-back” obligation equal to the training period
  • Contract is non-renewable after 4 years
  • Withdrawal before the end of the contract may incur training cost repayment

Apprentice Duties:

  • Training to become a Tractor or Earthmoving Mechanic/Technician
  • Equipment repair and maintenance
  • Stock control
  • Customer service
  • General workplace duties

Minimum Requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Communication and Admin skills
  • Computer literacy

Educational Requirements:
Option A: N2 Certificate with these subjects:

  • Mathematics
  • Engineering Science
  • Diesel Trade Theory
  • One of:
    • Industrial Electronics
    • Engineering/Technical Drawing
    • Motor Trade Theory

OR

Option B: Matric Certificate with the following passed subjects:

  • Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy)
  • Technical Mathematics
  • Physical Science
  • Technical Science
  • Engineering Graphics and Design

Note: Applicants without N2 can still apply and may be sponsored by AFGRI to complete required N2 subjects.
